      Inhalt:

Within the doctoral seminar on economic policy, current and prospective doctoral students present their own research project (preferably) on a topic in economic policy (e.g. unemployment, education, migration, climate change, etc.) and discuss it with the other seminar participants. The focus is on quantitative-empirical work.

Information for prospective doctoral students (master students): Prospective doctoral students work on an independent research question using scientific methods and present the results. Close supervision of the research progress by the supervisors is an essential part of the seminar. The seminar is an excellent preparation for a later research and academic career (doctoral studies). Prospective doctoral students are expected to have good to very good knowledge of empirical research and quantitative, econometric methods. Data access can be provided by the Institute of Economic Policy (e.g. data from statistical offices, Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) etc.). Prospective doctoral students write a term paper of about 10-15 pages plus appendices, explanations, codes. They have compulsory attendance at meetings and present their work.

      Bemerkungen:

The seminar takes place weekly during the semester. Depending on the number of registered students, the rhythm of the seminar may be irregular.

      Termine:Lehrpersonen:
      Fr. 14:30 - 16:00 | I-301Thomsen

What makes a good research design for identifying causal effects? This lecture teaches basic concepts and microeconometric methods for the identification of causal effects. We will talk about linear, parametric methods as well as about non-linear and non-parametric ones. All methods are explained using examples from empirical studies. Students learn to identify which research design is best suited for different applied questions. Students are enabled to critically assess empirical studies with a causal claim.

      1. Research Designs
      2. Correlation vs. Causality
      3. Evaluation and Causal Analysis
      4. Randomized Experiments

    • Behavioral Economics of Poverty (379071)

      Termine:Lehrpersonen:
      Mo. 16:15 - 17:45 | I-401Flores Taipe
      Inhalt:

Starting with the Sustainable Development Goals, poverty is one of the greatest challenges to tackle by most governments and non-government organizations across the globe. Most of the efforts to study and alleviate poverty focus on physical poverty (i.e., lack of monetary resources or lack of assets). Although relevant, material poverty is not the only phenomenon that individuals suffer. Biased preferences and beliefs or limited mental capacity also contribute to creating poverty. Giving money to the poor via cash transfers or subsidies could alleviate material poverty, but does it also influence the state of mind? This is one of the questions the seminar aims to answer. It will provide an introduction to a variety of psychosocial determinants of poverty. We will study how they affect the general population and their contribution to preventing individuals from escaping a detrimental cycle. We also explore different alternatives to improve a detrimental situation. The seminar would be interactive. It will include dynamic presentations, class discussions, and multimedia materials.
