The transfer of knowledge and expertise to the private sector, politics and the broader public is a central part of the work of the Institute of Economic Policy and its Center for Economic Policy Studies (CWS). Integrated into the Institute's work, economic policy issues are analysed on the basis of scientific concepts using modern quantitative methods and recommendations are derived from these analyses. These recommendations are disseminated to decision makers via various communication channels (such as publications, conferences, background discussions and press interviews).
The transfer activities at the Institute of Economic Policy cover regional as well as supra-regional and international issues. The thematic focus is on fundamental economic policy issues, national and regional innovation and competitiveness, changes in the labour market and developments in the education sector (in particular schools, universities and adult education).

Founded in 2016, the Center for Economic Policy Studies (CWS) conducts third-party funded project research on current economic and economic policy issues. Directed by Professor Stephan L. Thomsen, the CWS stands for independence and quality in applied research and the development of recommendations. The CWS cooperates closely with other research and consultancy institutes, statistical offices and research data centres in order to complement its own profile in a task-specific manner.
Exemplary projects include the analysis of the economic significance of environmental and climate protection on behalf of the Federal Environment Agency in cooperation with Fraunhofer ISI and DIW Berlin as well as indicator studies for the Expert Commission on Research and Innovation (EFI) on higher education, the qualification level of the workforce and participation in continuing education in cooperation with the German Center for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW).
